E. A. Martel Museum of Sulcis Paleo-Environments
Nestled within the evocative halls of the former mechanical workshops of the Grande Miniera di Serbariu lies a true treasure from the past: the Museum of Sulcis Paleo-Environments “E.A. Martel” (PAS). Here, a towering T-Rex commands the space, surrounded by a remarkable collection of dinosaur fossils and remains of animals that once roamed Sardinia. Visiting this museum offers a fascinating and surprising journey back in time—over 500 million years—to an era when the Sulcis landscape was inhabited by extraordinary, now-extinct creatures.
Perfect for families with children, the museum is an unmissable stop for those looking to add a touch of adventure to their Sulcis Iglesiente holiday. Its exhibits, rich in detail and curiosity, captivate visitors of all ages, offering an educational and engaging experience that enhances any Sardinian travel itinerary.

The museum
Founded in 1972 by the “E.A. Martel” Speleological Research Group, the museum has evolved over the years into a cutting-edge exhibition center dedicated to showcasing the geological and paleontological heritage of the Sulcis region. Each room tells a part of Earth’s history, with a particular focus on the bioevents and geoevents recorded in the rocks of southwestern Sardinia.
Among the main themes explored are those related to paleobiodiversity and the changes that shaped our planet during the Mesozoic Era—a crucial period marked by the evolution and extinction of many species. The museum’s narrative goes beyond the displayed artifacts, enriched by hands-on and interactive activities that engage visitors in dynamic and innovative ways.
If you’re spending your holiday in the Sulcis Iglesiente, don’t miss the opportunity to explore this unique corner of Carbonia, where science intertwines with entertainment.
