Thursday 12 November 2026 at 9.00 pm the Carbonia Film Festival presents \u201cDear Cruel World\u201d by Niccol\u00f2 Falsetti and Francesco Turbanti, scheduled at the Sala Fabio Masala of the Carbonia Film Factory.<\/p>\n
The film, an Italian production of 2026 lasting 104 minutes, is among the titles of the Carbonia Film Festival 11 (CFF11) Competition, scheduled in Carbonia from 11 to 15 November 2026. At the end of the screening, a meeting will be held with the authors Niccol\u00f2 Falsetti and Francesco Turbanti, offering the public the opportunity to delve deeper into the genesis of the film, the construction of the characters and the story of an Italian province observed through the eyes of adolescence.<\/p>\n
What is Dear Cruel World about?
\nThe story is set in Albinia in 1999. Giovanna is twelve years old and lives in a provincial microcosm regulated by conventions, silences and rules that adults seem incapable of fully explaining.\u00a0His father is no longer here. To be able to live with this absence, Giovanna imagines him as the hero of a Japanese cartoon, transforming pain into a fantastic universe through which to interpret what surrounds her.<\/p>\n
When Mirko, his only friend, disappears, the adults’ answers become increasingly vague.\u00a0Giovanna then decides to look for him alone.\u00a0Accompanying her in this search will be a group of boys who until that moment belonged to a world very different from hers: a gang of bullies.<\/p>\n
From this meeting a journey takes shape in which friendship, fear, loss and the need for truth intertwine with the passage from childhood towards a more complex reality.<\/p>\n
Dear Cruel World is a coming-of-age film
\n\u201cDear Cruel World\u201d builds its story around a protagonist who suddenly finds herself forced to deal with something that adults are unable, or unwilling, to tell her.\u00a0Mirko’s search thus also becomes a search for the truth.<\/p>\n
Giovanna is called to cross a world in which the simple explanations of childhood are no longer enough and in which people can be very different from the image they initially show.\u00a0The film moves within a concrete, rough and recognizable province, using it not only as a setting but as an integral part of the protagonist’s growth.<\/p>\n
Niccol\u00f2 Falsetti and Francesco Turbanti at the Carbonia Film Festival
\n\u201cDear cruel world\u201d is the second feature film by Niccol\u00f2 Falsetti, written together with Francesco Turbanti.\u00a0The film marks a new chapter in the collaboration between the two authors from Grosseto, who had already worked together on “Margini”, a first film capable of obtaining the Audience Award at the Venice International Critics’ Week, as well as two nominations for the David di Donatello and three nominations for the Nastri d’Argento.<\/p>\n
With “Dear cruel world”, Falsetti and Turbanti return to tell the story of the province and its characters, however shifting their gaze towards adolescence, the need to belong and the difficult comparison between imagination and reality.\u00a0After its presentation at the Rome Film Festival, the film arrives in Carbonia as a title in competition at the CFF11 \u2013 Carbonia Film Festival.
\nGiancane’s music and Zerocalcare’s animations
\nA characterizing element of \u201cDear Cruel World\u201d is the meeting between cinema, music and animation.\u00a0The original music is signed by Giancane, while the animations are created by Zerocalcare.\u00a0These languages \u200b\u200bcontribute to giving shape to the protagonist’s imagination and to the film’s particular balance between everyday reality, memory, fantasy and childhood perception.<\/p>\n
The use of animation becomes particularly significant in the way in which Giovanna reconstructs the figure of her father within herself, transforming him into the hero of a fantastic universe capable of accompanying her in the confrontation with a reality that is much more difficult to understand.
