Standing 27.50 meters tall, the Civic Tower was built in a record-breaking 150 days, an extraordinary achievement reflecting the efficiency and organization of its time. It was 1938, the year Carbonia was founded, when Benito Mussolini envisioned this symbolic city designed to support the Sulcis mining industry.
The Tower is divided into five levels, each rich with historical and architectural significance. The ground floor housed the Sacrario, a space dedicated to Fascist martyrs, adorned with fascist insignias and a portrait of Mussolini. It also features the famous marble bas-relief by sculptor Venanzo Crocetti (1913–2003), depicting Victory at the center, surrounded by allegories of Labor, Family, the Militia, and Regime Organizations.
On the first floor, known as the Direttorio, a balcony overlooks Piazza Roma. It was from here, on December 18, 1938, that Mussolini officially inaugurated the new city, addressing a crowd gathered to celebrate Carbonia’s promising future. The remaining floors were used as offices for Fascist organizations and their affiliates.
