The history
The extraordinary archaeological site of Nuraghe Sirai, located in the Sulcis hills near Carbonia, is a true one-of-a-kind in Sardinia. This historic fortress—surrounded by earthworks of Eastern influence—encloses a Nuragic village that stands as evidence of the coexistence between Sardinian and Phoenician societies in the 7th–6th centuries BCE. Craft activities, such as pottery, glassmaking, and leatherworking, made this site a significant center, revealing an efficient Sardinian-Phoenician economic system that utilized resources even in remote areas.
Within Nuraghe Sirai, archaeologists discovered the first complete Phoenician workshop in the Western world, which is also the oldest in Sardinia, underscoring the importance of these cultural and commercial exchanges. The nuraghe itself rises above the village, and before reaching it, visitors can admire the ancient fortifications, the pedestrian gateway to the fortress, the sacred area, and various artisan workshops. Walking among the walls, towers, and the central keep, one can feel the layers of centuries-old history in a journey that combines archaeological discoveries with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Nuraghe Sirai is not just an archaeological treasure but a place where the spirit of an ancient people comes alive. Its stones, imbued with distant stories, preserve the traces of a vibrant and ingenious culture. Suspended between past and future, this fortress continues to tell what we know while guarding mysteries yet to be uncovered, offering every visitor an unforgettable journey into the most authentic heart of Carbonia’s and Sardinia’s history.
