Day 1 – Mines and Archaeology
Carbonia, archaeology, and mining history
Morning (9:00 – 13:00)
> Grande Miniera di Serbariu + Museo del Carbone
Begin with the Grande Miniera di Serbariu, the symbolic site of Carbonia’s recent history, and the Museo del Carbone. Here you can understand the importance of the mining industry in Sulcis, the living conditions of the miners, and the technological evolution of coal extraction.
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
> Museo Archeologico Villa Sulcis
A short distance away, visit the Museo Archeologico Villa Sulcis for an overview of the area’s ancient history, from prehistoric finds to Phoenician-Punic finds.
Duration: 1 hour
Lunch (13:00 – 14:30)
Have lunch in the centre of Carbonia, choosing a trattoria with typical Sardinian dishes, local wines, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Afternoon (14:30 – 18:00)
> Area Archeologica di Monte Sirai
Spend the afternoon at Monte Sirai, one of the most important archaeological sites in Sulcis. It includes Phoenician-Punic remains, a necropolis, a tophet, and spectacular views over the plain.
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
Evening in Carbonia
Return to the centre for a short walk among the 1930s Rationalist buildings, such as Piazza Roma and the Teatro Centrale, to understand the city’s urban origins. Enjoy dinner in the centre and end the evening with a glass of local wine.
Day 2: Beaches, Cliffs, and Nature

> From Portopaglietto to the Golfo del Leone
Morning (9:00 – 12:30)
> Portopaglietto Beach (Portoscuso)
Leave Carbonia towards Portoscuso (about 20 minutes by car) and spend the morning at Portopaglietto beach, a small sandy bay set between cliffs. Relax in the sun, walk along the shore, and take photos with the cliffs in the background. If the season allows it, take a refreshing swim. The area is quiet, with crystal-clear sea and breathtaking coastal views.
Lunch (12:30 – 14:00)
After the beach, stop at a sea-facing restaurant or kiosk in Portopaglietto. Enjoy fresh fish, seafood dishes, or typical Sardinian cuisine with an evocative panorama. The sound of the waves and the view of the cliffs frame the meal.
Afternoon (14:00 – 18:00)
> Nebida and Masua coast
In the afternoon, head towards the Golfo del Leone and visit Nebida and Masua (about 30 minutes by car from Portoscuso). In Nebida, walk the Belvedere, a panoramic path with views over the sea and the iconic sea stack of Pan di Zucchero, a limestone giant rising from the water. In Masua, go down to the small beach to see the imposing cliffs from below, or enjoy the view from the terrace.
This area is ideal for photos and a short walk in nature. It also helps you understand the link between the coastal environment and the area’s ancient mining past, because some abandoned mining structures make the landscape even more evocative.
Final relaxation and return to Carbonia
Return to Carbonia after the afternoon among sea views and cliffs. If you wish, stop at a viewpoint along the way, among low scrub, olive groves, and hills overlooking the sea. Back in Carbonia, end the day with an aperitivo or a light dinner. Or rest at the hotel and revisit the images of the turquoise sea, the imposing cliffs, and the flavours enjoyed at lunch. These routes tell the deeper story of Sulcis, combining culture, memory, and extraordinary landscapes. They are an ideal journey for those who want to discover the less-known and more fascinating side of Sardinia.

> Day 3: the beaches of Sant’Antioco
Morning (9:00 – 12:30)
> Maladroxia
Leave Carbonia towards Sant’Antioco (about 20–25 minutes). Reach Maladroxia, known for its light sand, a seabed suitable for everyone, and clear water. Swim and relax for a few hours in the sun.
Recommended duration: 1.5–2 hours
> Co’ e Cuaddus (Cala dei Cavalli)
After Maladroxia, move to Co’ e Cuaddus, another well-known beach on the island. It is wilder and more evocative, surrounded by rocks and macchia mediterranea. It is excellent for another swim, a few photos, and moments of pure relaxation in a natural setting.
Lunch (12:30 – 14:00)
Choose a restaurant or kiosk near one of the beaches, or in the area, for a sea-view lunch. Along the seafront of Sant’Antioco or near the beaches, there are bars and restaurants offering fresh and tasty fish dishes.
Afternoon (14:00 – 18:00)
> Calasetta and its beaches
Go to Calasetta, on the northern tip of the island, about 20 minutes by car from Maladroxia. Calasetta includes beaches such as Sottotorre, with white sand and turquoise water. It also offers the possibility of a short walk in the small village, with its historic centre and the characteristic tower.
Recommended duration: 2–3 hours for swimming, walks, and relaxation.
Evening
Return to Carbonia (30–35 minutes from Calasetta). End the day with dinner in the city or nearby, perhaps tasting typical Sulcis dishes and reliving the colours and scents of the beaches visited.

Day 4: mining coast and Nuragic evidence
Morning (9:00 – 13:00)
> Porto Flavia and Masua
Dedicate the morning to the mining coast of Sulcis. Reach Porto Flavia, a fascinating ore-loading facility perched over the sea, an example of mining engineering perfectly set within a breathtaking coastal landscape. A guided tour allows you to learn about the technical solutions adopted in the first decades of the 20th century.
Duration: 1.5–2 hours
After the visit, make a short stop in Masua to admire the sea stacks and the coastal views.
Lunch (13:00 – 14:30)
Stop at an agriturismo in the nearby countryside, or at a restaurant along the return road towards Carbonia. Taste local products, perhaps a dish based on locally farmed meats and seasonal vegetables.
Afternoon (14:30 – 18:00)
> Nuraghe Seruci (Gonnesa)
The afternoon is dedicated to Sardinian Nuragic history. Visit Nuraghe Seruci, one of the most significant Nuragic complexes in the area. Discover the Nuragic civilisation, the island’s very ancient culture, by observing stone towers and village remains, and by understanding the deep roots of Sardinian identity.
Duration: about 1 hour
Evening
Return to Carbonia for a coffee or an aperitivo in the city. Or visit an artisanal workshop to purchase typical products (cheeses, pane carasau, Sardinian sweets). End the day with a relaxing dinner in Carbonia or nearby. Enjoy fresh fish if available, or return to land dishes, accompanied by a good Cannonau or Carignano del Sulcis.
